Located on the historical North Shanxi Road in Shanghai, the building is in the quiet corner of Datong Lane. The area was home to many important figures in contemporary China, such as Rong Zongjing, Robert HoTung Bosman, and Soong Sisters. These historical significances brought the quiet residential area into a respected place. As a resident of the area, the barista was inspired to develop a social and gathering hub through coffee for the local community.
Along with the barista, STUDIO 4/301 developed the concept of a ‘community coffee shop.’ Opposite being an online celebrity shop, a daily, down-to-earth, and yet elaborate coffee space is anticipated. The design team decided to move the shop boundary back from the street despite the limited site area. This strategy is the softest intervention of the coffee shop in the residential area and better embeds the building into the streetscape.
The Coffee shop has a limited area of less than 20 sqm in GFA. After discussions with the barista, STUDIO 4/301 was convinced by the idea that making coffee is a sort of performance. It is an enticing and healing journey. Within this tiny space, 4/301 believes the insertion of a massive bar table can become the most satisfactory ‘stage’ for the barista to perform his coffee-making creation and share the journey with his customers.
The facade has six full-height glazing-glass sliding doors. With the doors opened, the coffee space is naturally integrated into the street landscape. Moreover, the small outdoor area in the coffee shop is paved with the same outdoor pavement bricks. For the interior flooring, the design team chose handmade firewood ceramic tiles of a natural brown-red colour. This colour composition and the firewood-burned process recall the hue of roasted coffee beans. The width of the firewood-burnt tiles aligns with the outdoor tiles. Not only does it reinforce the cohesive relationship between the shop and the street, but it also develops a subtle and elegant transition between the indoors and outdoors.
As the major volume in the space, the bar table is made of basswood plywood and stainless steel plates. The thin metal plates are welded as a strong frame, which defines the seating area and holds equipment. A 6mm dark grey metal plate is placed for the tabletop, whose darker tone and reflection strengthen the idea of a stage for the barista.
Echoing the coffee brand’s name – Pages, the side of the plywood is kept untreated. Therefore, the multi-layers of wood sheets and metal plates are composed as if they were pages of a book. The other fixtures also follow this design language and expose the untreated side of the plywood. These elegant details subtly reflect the brand’s identity and contribute to the friendly community coffee environment.
