Qingmen CAFE&TAPROOM is the third project in cooperation with the catering brand “Qingmen”. Different from the previous two projects, which were designed around the daytime experience, the project at this time focuses on the bar function, which requires an atmosphere that combines day and night.
We hope to provide a dreamlike experience for the guests who come here to have a drink and relax. The colors, materials, furniture and other elements of the space will be intertwined into an atmosphere, catalyzing the sense of relaxation brought by craft beer.
The project site is a square space of about 80 square meters. There was a huge arched glass window originally on one side.We arranged the bar counter, wine wall along the left wall, while the rest of the space was arranged as a seating area. How to integrate the original abrupt single arch window into the space is the key consideration of the design.
The central element of the design intervention is an eccentric radial acrylic vaulted ceiling that responds to the existing arched windows. The booths in the seating area are also arc-shaped on the plan, and the three dimensions on the top of the wall are composed of three arcs as a whole. Different from the normal segmented booths, we hope to promote a close social experience through continuous booths, where people can sit around and interact with their neighbors.
The space enclosed by curves is full of tension, naturally carrying a sense of illusion that is alienated from reality. Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni’s “Red Desert” is an important aesthetic reference for us in constructing this space. We hope that visitors to this retreat can feel as comfortable as being in their own dream. The upturned slope terrain behind the arc-shaped booth uses adhesive stones of the same color as the wall, which expands and blurs the boundary of the wall, like red sand dunes moving with the wind and tracing the space. The walls and the floor are intertwined, creating a contrasting collision of colors and materials with the acrylic ceiling and terrazzo floor tiles. At the same time, the metal and stone island form a contrast between industry and nature. The suspended ceiling is composed of acrylic and light film with variable color temperature, providing unlimited possibilities for ambient light at night. Different materials collide with different sparks, creating a unique atmosphere in this space.
