Bubbles is an adaptable spatial pneumatic installation at an urban scale. The installation consists of large pneumatic volumes that inflate and tong in reaction to the visitors coming to the site. If unoccupied the volume of the site is slowly filled by the spatially distributed sacks creating a translucent bubble translucent infill. Sensors in the bubbles cause a fan in the manifold to transfer air to the bubble.Visitors encounter an adaptive volumetric sense of architecture rather than a static surface. When a visitor bumps or pushes a bubble, it deflates, providing a pathway into the installation. The huge rip-stop nylon airbags hang in pairs connected by clear ducting. When touched, sensors initiate an exchange of air between the spheres. From the onset, the intent was to make a fully immersive architectural environment which could spatially respond to the changing social conditions.
