TEMP has finished an incubator office space in the new business district of Hangzhou, China, which will house a few IT start-up companies. The 2,000sqm office was created for the Knights Group, an investment management company mainly based in New York and China. The project spatially exists as a gradient continuous loop from being totally open and transparent to being more closed and private in order to cover a wide range of different transparencies each space require. Different sets of material palettes also follow the transitioning zones to carefully define each space.

The entrance of the office features a large front desk embedded with four 50-inch TVs. The space slowly transitions into an open lounge area with a large fish tank and a bar that faces the river. This lobby space uses different colors and textures of brass, marble, and terrazzo flooring to create a sense of balance between richness and simplicity.

The studio has designed four modular types of tea tables to cover the lounge area. They can be arranged freely to accommodate for changing settings like puzzle pieces. Three different finishes of stainless steel were put together to echo the other sets of materials used in the larger environment.

Passing through the lounge space, you enter an open plan working area with pockets of bright glass meeting rooms. Custom-designed black steel desks are scattered across the longer space in a tetris-like formation. The seating arrangement is efficiently based on a perfect 600mm x 600mm grid. Yet it is highly random and has no dividing walls encouraging for synergetic encounters between each team and individual.

The conference room is divided by a two three-meter wide glass doors. The two doors can be closed to divide the large space into smaller meeting spaces. This allows for a more flexible use of space as the largest conference room may only be used only a few times a month.

The investor’s zone is naturally a more private one. Louvers and furniture are carefully placed to create physical semi-transparent boundaries allowing for more subtle interaction between the group members. Each zone is connected through corridors and bookshelves with brass lighting fixtures also designed by the studio.

The leader’s offices have larger window views towards the river. These spaces are furnished with warmer palettes of materials as carpet, wall fabrics, and wood panels.
