Designed by Heatherwick Studio, the Xi’an Central Cultural Business District (CCBD) is situated between the ancient Temple of Heaven ruins and the Shaanxi Radio and TV Tower. The entire commercial complex features a three-dimensional urban landscape, with multiple interconnected buildings arranged around the vertical park “Tree of Life.” Paving and lush greenery fill the spaces in between, creating a series of scenic viewing platforms.

Designed by Guo Xin Space Design Studio, Xiao Teahouse is located on the top floor of a building within a commercial complex. Thanks to its staggered layout, the rooftop garden of the central mall naturally serves as the project’s “outdoor courtyard.” The surrounding commercial spaces are relatively sparse, allowing lush greenery to thrive. The original site features high ceilings, with open views to the south and west. When gazing southward, the “Tree of Life”—inspired by the ancient ginkgo tree from Guanyin Temple—offers not just a scenic vista but also the core design inspiration for the entire project.
The glass curtain wall of the building is not a vertical plane but features an angled, recessed design with two access points. The design intentionally positions the entrance within this recessed area as the main doorway, aiming to soften the site’s sense of territoriality and welcome guests with a humble, understated gesture.

Structure in relation to function
Xiao Teahouse is positioned as a light business reception venue, requiring relatively private VIP rooms. The site features a floor height exceeding 9 meters, though no additional construction is permitted. While the full-height glazed façade provides abundant natural light and expansive views, only the L-shaped southern and western exposures offer direct daylight. Given the brand positioning and business operational needs, the primary challenge lies in strategically planning the two major functional zones: private rooms and open seating areas.

Capitalizing on the vertical volume, the design elevates portions of the darker northern and eastern zones to create a tiered spatial division. This establishes a general north-high, south-low topography, strategically directing sightlines toward the open southern landscape.

From the elevated private room zone, visual connections extend toward the southern open seating area ©杨磊
While traditional commercial spaces typically reserve prime window seating for private rooms, our design intentionally positions seven open tea tables along the sunlit western and southern edges, with ten elevated private rooms connected by staircases and three interlinked corridors. This creates a serpentine circulation path with ever-shifting sightlines. Lush vegetation acts as both visual screens and curated “framed views”, evoking the discovery-driven charm of classical Chinese gardens.
Since opening, the teahouse has consistently seen waiting lists form, with younger patrons particularly drawn to the open seating area for tea sessions and social media photography. As designers, this unexpected popularity serves as powerful validation of our counterintuitive strategy to “cede the best spaces”—affirming our studio’s longstanding conviction: thoughtful design catalyzes commercial success.

To address the lighting challenges in the private rooms, we employed an “architecture within architecture” approach, creating a nested structural volume with strategically placed horizontal windows. This design enables indirect daylighting for the private spaces while maintaining visual connections to both interior and exterior landscapes.

To prevent visual interference between private rooms and open seating, we extended curved floating eaves beneath the windows of the west-facing ‘nested pavilions’. Each eave’s arc and elevation were precisely calibrated through sightline studies.

Oriental Charm
From the outset, our central challenge was interpreting the Eastern essence of a tea space through contemporary design language. When the design team reached an impasse, gazing once more at the ‘Tree of Life’ beyond the window sparked fresh inspiration.
The CCBD’s architectural silhouette—influenced by the ‘uplifted eaves and sweeping corners’ of Xi’an’s ancient temples—traces a skyline of ‘interlocking curves.’ Similarly, the ginkgo leaves of the Tree of Life embody a striking tension between rigid materials and fluid surfaces, mirroring this dialogue of tradition and modernity.

Thus, the traditional Chinese overhanging eave was reimagined within the ‘nested pavilion’ private rooms. Through interlocking, deconstruction, and reassembly, these elements extend into select VIP areas—creating layered spatial relationships and filtered daylight. Clad in gold leaf, the eaves become the space’s most striking visual anchor

The gold leaf draws inspiration from the ancient ginkgo tree at Guanyin Zen Monastery beneath Zhongnan Mountain—its millennium-honed golden radiance translated through 60,000 gilded fragments. As sunlight traverses, these flakes cast undulating, ephemeral patterns, our architectural homage to the enduring vitality of the sacred tree, engaging in silent dialogue with the ‘Tree of Life’ beyond the windows. These 60,000 golden pieces are not merely decorative motifs, but anchors of the space’s spiritual essence.
Thus transformed, the space transcends functional utility to become a medium evoking poetry, emotion, and memory—where the Eastern sensibility of the tea ceremony unfurls in measured elegance.

Stillness leads to far-reaching vision
The interior flooring delineates zones through distinct materials: warm timber for private rooms, gray linen stone for western open seating, and golden bricks along the southern perimeter. This natural material palette orchestrates spatial hierarchy while grounding the tea culture in organic tactility.
The gilded flooring echoes overhead gold leaf installations, its patina shifting subtly with daylight. To the west, the textured gray stone surfaces whisper restraint, their roughness contrasting with soaring white walls that serve dual roles: amplifying material textures and acting as canvases for ever-changing “light paintings,” bathing guests in luminous openness.
Elevated and sheltered by floating eaves, these timber-floored sanctuaries—each named after a tree species—curate tranquility. Black geometric furniture and white linen sofas compose understated elegance, while hand-thrown ceramics and curated greenery pay homage to nature’s artistry.
Bathed in tea-scented air, Xiao Teahouse stands as a study in luminous serenity. Through seasonal transformations, it remains a poised vessel—catching wind currents, tracing light trajectories, and mirroring the arboreal wisdom of its ancient ginkgo counterpart.
